Jaipal Reddy is a member of the 15th Lok Sabha. He is a member
of the Indian National Congress. He is currently the Union Cabinet Minister
of Science and Technology & Earth Sciences.
He was an active student leader and was elected twice as President,
Osmania Students Union, Osmania University. He was General Secretary,
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee during 1965-71. Between 1969 and
1984, he was a Member of Legislative Assembly, representing Kalwakurthy
Constituency, Mehabubnagar District Andhra Pradesh for four terms till
he was elected as Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. He was elected to
the Lok Sabha five times.
He was also a member
of the Rajya Sabha on two occasions, 1990–1996 and 1997–1998.
He also held the position of leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha
for a year from June 1991 to June 1992.
During his period as the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and
Broadcasting between 1997–1998, he introduced Prasar Bharathi Bill
for providing autonomy to Doordarshan and All India Radio. He was Union
Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Culture during 2004-2005.
He played a key role in introduction of new FM radio channels in India
and expansion of the same.
He held the post of Union Cabinet Minister for Urban Development from
2005 to 2010. He is the mastermind behind the Delhi Metro Master Plan,
which is appreciated by one and all. After grand success of Delhi Metro
Project, he sanctioned Metro Rail Works for Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai
and Hyderabad. The JNNURM under his control has sanctioned various
projects like Krishna Drinking Water Supply to Hyderabad, Drainage
Treatment Projects in major cities in India, providing infrastructure,
AC and Non AC buses to various state RTCs.
He held the post of Union Cabinet Minister for Petroleum and Natural
Gas from 2011 to 2012. During this period, he made several reforms in
the Pricing policies, strengthening of Oil PSUs, country wide network
of Petrol, LPG and CNG modern outlets etc. Transparency in LPG system
is a major achievement.
At present he is holding the post of Union Cabinet Minister of Science
and Technology & Earth Sciences from 2013. He is taking various development
steps in the field of Science & Technology.
He is known for the quality of his debates in the parliament and was
awarded the “Outstanding Parliamentarian” Award
